Not far from north of Phuket town, located at Yaowarat road have an old Chinese Taoist temple by name Lim Hu Tai Su Shrine (also known as Shrine Sam Kong). Shrine Sam Kong is a revered place of worship for the local community. It’s become a key part of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival when it hosts several ceremonies and a procession during the annual 9-day event of 'Nine Emperor Gods Festival'. The festival is famous for its 'extreme' celebrations. These include acts that invoke the gods, from firewalking to body piercing. Acts of self-mortification are undertaken by participants who act as mediums of the gods. These have become more spectacular and daring as each year goes by.
