Revisited Wat Lahanrai Temple: Giant Luang Pu Tim Statue, Amulets & New Giant Buddha - Rayong - Thailand (part 1/2).

A Journey to Wat Lahanrai — In the Footsteps of Luang Pu Tim.

There are temples we visit simply to admire their beauty, and then there are temples whose significance comes from the people, faith, and history that have shaped them over generations. Wat Lahanrai in Rayong belongs to the latter. Located in Nong Lalok, Ban Khai District, Wat Lahanrai has a history dating back to the early Rattanakosin period, traditionally traced to around 1811. The temple was originally known as Wat Rai Wari, before later becoming known as Wat Lahanrai. It is now best known as the temple closely associated with one of eastern Thailand's most revered Buddhist masters, Luang Pu Tim Isariko. 

For devotees and collectors of Thai Buddhist amulets, the name of Luang Pu Tim carries a special significance. His long life of Buddhist practice, meditation, discipline and service to the local community became inseparable from the history of Wat Lahanrai. After his passing in 1975, his legacy continued to draw pilgrims and devotees to the temple, where his memory remains deeply respected.

The Great Luang Pu Tim Statue.

The enormous seated image of Luang Pu Tim Isariko is perhaps the first thing that catches the eye when visiting Wat Lahanrai. The statue was created as a major memorial to the revered monk and as a landmark for the temple and the eastern region of Thailand.

The project was connected with the 200th anniversary of Wat Lahanrai. In January 2012 (BE2555), records mention the beginning of construction work for the building that would support the giant image. The planned statue was announced as having a 12-metre-wide lap, with the intention of making it one of the largest Luang Pu Tim images in the world.

Wat Lahanrai is also famous throughout Thailand for the sacred objects associated with Luang Pu Tim, particularly the Phra Khun Phaen Phong Phrai Kumarn, as well as his coins and other consecrated amulets. For collectors, these objects represent an important chapter in Thai amulet history; for devotees, they are much more than collectibles — they are symbols of faith, remembrance and devotion to the revered monk. My visit to Wat Lahanrai was therefore not simply a temple visit. It was an opportunity to step into a place where history, Buddhist faith and the legacy of Luang Pu Tim come together — to pay respect, to learn about the monk behind the legendary amulets, and to experience the atmosphere of the temple that became the center of his spiritual life.

In front of the giant Luang Pu Tim statue, several sacred and symbolic figures add to the grandeur of the temple grounds, including an Erawan three-headed elephant statue, a majestic Phaya Krut (Garuda) statue, and a large ceremonial gong. Together, these imposing features create a striking and spiritually meaningful setting, reflecting the deep faith and reverence of devotees who come to pay their respects at Wat Lahanrai.

One of the most impressive sights at Wat Lahanrai is the enormous image of Luang Pu Tim Isariko, seated in quiet meditation and overlooking the temple grounds. For devotees, this is more than simply a monumental statue — it is a powerful symbol of the monk whose life and spiritual legacy are inseparable from Wat Lahanrai. Standing before this enormous image, it is easy to understand why Wat Lahanrai remains an important pilgrimage destination for devotees of Luang Pu Tim. The statue seems to bring together the past and present — preserving the memory of the revered monk while welcoming a new generation of visitors who come to learn about his life, pay their respects, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of the temple where he once lived and served.

Adjacent to the giant Luang Pu Tim statue is a spacious prayer hall where devotees come to pay their respects and offer prayers. Inside, visitors can worship the revered image of Luang Pu Tim, together with the Seven Days Buddha images, representing the seven days of the week, and the sacred Luang Pho Sothorn Buddha image. The hall provides a peaceful space for devotees to pause, make offerings, light incense, and quietly reflect. Surrounded by these revered images, the atmosphere feels serene and deeply devotional, offering visitors a moment of calm and spiritual connection amid their journey through Wat Lahanrai.

The new project is being created at the temple of Luang Pu Tim ~ Wat Lahanrai, and the temple describes the Buddha as Phra Phuttha Suwannaphanwichit, also known as Luang Pho U-Ngern–U-Thong. I came across a donation box (amulets funds direct put into this box) dedicated to the construction of Phra Phuttha Suwannaphanwichit (Luang Pho U-Ngern–U-Thong). Devotees and visitors are invited to contribute to this meaningful project, with proceeds from the temple’s amulets and sacred objects going directly toward supporting the construction of this magnificent Buddha image.

During my visit, I also came across an amulet event held to support the construction of Phra Phuttha Suwannaphanwichit (Luang Pho U-Ngern–U-Thong). Devotees and collectors gathered to rent sacred amulets and commemorative objects, with the proceeds dedicated to helping fund the construction of this magnificent Buddha image.

One of the more unexpected sights at Wat Lahanrai is a striking Optimus Prime statue wearing a Phra Khun Paen amulet. Standing among the temple’s sacred and commemorative displays, this unusual figure creates a fascinating blend of contemporary pop culture and Thailand’s deeply rooted amulet tradition.

The detail is especially eye-catching: the iconic Transformer is adorned with a Phra Khun Paen amulet, reflecting the enduring popularity and cultural significance of Thai sacred amulets. It is a playful yet memorable sight — an unexpected encounter between modern imagination and traditional Buddhist devotional culture.

A place for paying homage to the relics Luang Pu Tim Isariko, worshipping 'rent' sacred objects of Wat Lahanrai ~ LP Tim Isariko.

Wat Lahanrai invites to participate in making merit by applying gold leaf to Phra Phuttha Suwannaphanwichit, also known as Luang Pho U-Ngern–U-Thong. A New Sacred Landmark at Wat Lahanrai, beyond the courtyard of the great Luang Pu Tim statue, toward the rear of Wat Lahanrai and beside the Rayong River, a magnificent new sacred landmark is taking shape — Phra Phuttha Suwannaphanwichit, or Luang Pho U-Ngern–U-Thong.

This monumental Buddha image is being created with a remarkable 16-metre-wide lap, rising above a specially constructed base and building. The project began with the foundation-stone ceremony in January 2022, followed by a series of traditional casting ceremonies in which the great Buddha was created piece by piece.

While the casting ceremonies were held in the open courtyard before the giant Luang Pu Tim image, the Buddha's permanent home is at the rear of the temple, beside the river. Its enormous scale and serene presence are set to create a new focal point for devotees visiting Wat Lahan rai — adding a new chapter to the temple's long spiritual history and its enduring connection with Luang Pu Tim.

Inside the pavilion, a beautifully arranged altar dedicated to Luang Pu Tim Isarigo invites devotees to pause and pay their respects. The peaceful atmosphere of the pavilion creates a quiet space for prayer, reflection, and remembrance.

Standing before the revered image of Luang Pu Tim, devotees can offer incense and prayers, expressing their faith and gratitude to the great monk whose spiritual legacy remains deeply connected with Wat Lahanrai.

Throughout Wat Lahanrai, several beautifully maintained pavilions and buildings are dedicated to different aspects of Buddhist worship and temple life. The grounds include a sermon hall, shrines, prayer halls, and peaceful spaces for devotees to make offerings and pay their respects.

Each pavilion has its own character and purpose, creating a sense of discovery as you walk through the temple grounds. From quiet prayer spaces to larger halls where Buddhist teachings and ceremonies take place, these buildings form an important part of the spiritual atmosphere of Wat Lahanrai and reflect the temple’s role as a place of worship, learning, and community.

Inside one of the shrines at Wat Lahanrai stands a remarkable golden statue of Luang Pu Tim Isariko, a deeply revered image among devotees. This statue holds a special place in the temple’s history, as it was created and enshrined before the construction of the much larger Luang Pu Tim monument that now dominates the temple grounds.

At the top of the temple’s gate entrance arch stands a remarkable image of Phra Pidta Uttamo, watching over the gateway and welcoming devotees as they enter Wat Lahanrai hall building. Positioned high above the entrance, the sacred figure makes a striking impression and adds a distinctive spiritual character to the temple’s architecture.

Sala Watthanatham of Wat Lahanrai, among the many buildings and sacred spaces throughout Wat Lahanrai is Sala Watthanatham, meaning the Cultural Pavilion. This building forms part of the temple's broader role as a place where Buddhist faith, local traditions, and the history of Wat Lahanrai are preserved and shared. The pavilion reflects the cultural dimension of the temple beyond its role as a place of worship. Wat Lahanrai is closely connected with the life and legacy of Luang Pu Tim Isariko, one of Rayong's most revered Buddhist masters, and the temple continues to serve as an important destination for devotees and visitors wishing to learn about his life and the spiritual heritage of the temple.

Another important building within the grounds of Wat Lahanrai is the Sermon Hall, a place dedicated to Buddhist teachings, religious ceremonies, and spiritual gatherings. The hall provides a peaceful setting where monks deliver Dhamma teachings and devotees come together for prayer, meditation, and important Buddhist occasions.
